Illuminating the Canal: Herbal Extracts Meet dental Lasers

Abstract
Aim:
The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of activated herbal root canal final irrigant on the removal of the smear layer by different two types of dental lasers using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM).

Materials and Methods:
Fifty-four extracted single-rooted, anterior teeth were decapitated and mechanically prepared up to size X4, 0.06 taper. Then, they allocated randomly into three groups of eighteen each; Group I (conventional), Group II (diode laser-activated), and Group III (Er:YAG laser-activated). Each group was further subdivided into three subgroups; Salvadora persica Linn extract, saline, and NaOCl. Diode laser was delivered using 400μm fiber tip while laser while Er:YAG laser was irradiated through PIPS tip. After that, the teeth were dried and longitudinally split for ESEM examination.

Results:
Salvadora persica Linn extract was found to be more effective than saline and NaOCl irrigants on smear layer removal capacity. Diode and Er:YAG laser-activated groups were demonstrated better results than conventional group.

Conclusion:
Salvadora persica Linn extract can be effectively used as a final irrigant for eliminating smear layer particularly when using laser activation technique.
